On November 26, 2024, a group of overseas travel agents from the recently concluded China International Travel Mart 2024 in Shanghai was invited to explore the vibrant cultural and tourism offerings of Suzhou, located in Jiangsu province. This exclusive event, organized by the Suzhou municipal bureau of culture, radio, television, and tourism, presented the city’s rich history, iconic landmarks, and intangible cultural heritage through the theme “Youyuan Jingmeng” (The Interrupted Dream).
The phrase “Youyuan Jingmeng” is drawn from the famous Chinese Kunqu Opera, Peony Pavilion, which tells the story of Du Liniang, the heroine who experiences a dream in a garden that leads to a passionate romance. Suzhou, long renowned for its classic gardens and water towns, served as the perfect backdrop for showcasing its deeply rooted cultural traditions. Among the city’s most famous gardens is the Humble Administrator’s Garden, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the locations visited by the international guests during their two-day tour.
The event attracted 30 overseas travel agents from six Gulf countries and Russia, 24 young Sinologists from 21 different countries, as well as 30 representatives from Suzhou’s local tourism industry, including travel agencies, scenic spots, hotels, and online travel platforms. This diverse group gathered to learn more about Suzhou’s tourism offerings, which include not only its spectacular gardens but also its ancient water towns like Zhouzhuang and its celebrated craftsmanship.
One of the highlights of the event was the introduction of works by two of Suzhou’s renowned artisans, Wu Wenkang and Chen Qiaosheng, both of whom were recognized as part of the 2023 Forbes China Top 100 Outstanding Craftspeople. These master craftsmen’s works, which include delicate embroidery, intricate silk weaving, and other traditional arts, were featured to give attendees a firsthand experience of Suzhou’s intangible cultural heritage.
The travel agents were given an in-depth tour of Suzhou’s cultural treasures, with site inspections of the Humble Administrator’s Garden, Zhouzhuang water town, and a museum dedicated to Suzhou’s traditional arts and crafts. The aim was to provide international visitors with a deeper understanding of Suzhou’s historical and cultural significance, while also promoting the city as an attractive destination for global travellers.
This tourism initiative is part of China’s broader efforts to promote its national tourism image and increase international tourism exchange. The recent China International Travel Mart (CITM) 2024, which took place from November 22 to 24 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai, was a major platform for unveiling new inbound tourism products and fostering international collaboration. The event featured discussions on the integration of global tourism resources, the facilitation of inbound tourism, and the promotion of domestic and regional cooperation.
The Suzhou tourism event was organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China and was specifically aimed at promoting local tourism destinations, such as Suzhou, to overseas markets.
